As noted above, we only go off of coverage provided by Delta for both the animal handler and animal involved. This was explicitly written in our P&P and the only way our hospital director would authorize bringing AAA/T to our hospital. All AAA/T teams are made aware that they only have their coverage and our not entitled to any coverage from our hospital.

Please look at the quotes below. There is NO coverage from either Delta Society or TDInc. for injuries to the Pet Therapy ANIMALS. The handlers are covered thru Delta Society , but but the DOGS aren’t covered by either policy.

Jan Fincher, our Pet Therapy Volunteer Coordinator pulled the following information directly from the Delta Society and TDInc websites:

Delta Society:
e. Coverage for injuries suffered by Pet Partners Teams is limited to qualified medical expenses of less than $10,000 for Pet Partners Handlers. There is no coverage for injuries suffered by Pet Partners Animals.

TDInc.:
The policy provides coverage for injury or illness to other people and property damage that may occur as a result of a therapeutic visitation with your dog. It does not provide coverage for injury to you or injury
to your dog as a result of participation in this program.

I think our teams are under the mistaken notion that they are covered – especially if they are certified.

If they are certified with TDI, Delta or Therapy Dogs Inc (which to be part of our program they have to be) they are covered with a 1 million dollar policy carried by the the certifying organization. A home owners policy will not cover them here at the hospital should they bite someone or get injured, so you might want to have you therapy person check again and make sure that her company knows that she is in a hospital going to patient rooms, etc.

We currently have 29 dogs and 1 miniture pony and they are all covered by their certifiying organiztion and know they can’t use their personal insurance here per Risk Management policy and our Pet Therapy Program Policy.

For our dogs or pet therapy, they must have their own insurance, and for most, they have it covered in their home owners policy. I have one volunteer who has it covered under her renters insurance and had a hard time trying to find coverage.

HI Sandra,

Our volunteers transport patients at discharge and help patients get into their car (very little assistance). We do not discharge anyone who needs more help then a hand and we do not discharge anyone who has had knee or hip surgery.
Volunteers can help a staff member transport a patient to a test, but they can never be alone.
I have a wheelchair competency and every volunteer has to complete this training.

The trip to Rifle was even better than we expected! 10 Front Range members made the trip and were welcomed by 3 of the Western Slope DVSs. We were warmly greeted at the Grand River Hospital and given a tour of this beautiful facility. Our own, Laura Kinder, Longmont United Hospital DVS, facilitated a very interactive dialogue about “How to Make Your Volunteers Your BFFs”. Everyone who attended agreed that one meeting per year on the Western Slope would be very beneficial. Thank you to all who made it so successful!
